CollegeFit

Methodology

How CollegeFit compiles its data and computes predictions — stated plainly, with the limitations.

1. Data sources

Every cutoff figure on CollegeFit comes from an official government counselling authority— JoSAA, CSAB, MCC and the state NEET cells, the Consortium of National Law Universities (CLAT), KEA (KCET), the Maharashtra and Telangana CET cells, and equivalents. We retrieve each authority’s published seat-allotment results and parse the opening and closing ranks per institute, programme, category, quota, gender and round. The result is a single, comparable dataset of 7 lakh+ records across multiple years. We never crowd-source or estimate the underlying historical numbers.

2. Admission-chance predictions

When you enter your rank, we compare it against the most recent official opening and closing ranks for each institute–branch–category combination. A rank comfortably better than the closing rank shows a high chance; as your rank approaches and passes the closing rank, the estimated chance tapers down. We surface the historical ranks alongside the estimate so you can judge it yourself — the data, not a black box, does the talking.

3. Expected (pre-season) cutoffs

For colleges and branches with at least three years of history, we publish an expected closing-rank range for the upcoming cycle. The estimate is a linear trend (ordinary least squares) fitted to the historical closing ranks, with an uncertainty band of ±1.5× the median absolute deviation of the fit. Combinations with fewer than three years of data get no predicted page — we would rather show nothing than a low-confidence number.

4. How current the data is

During counselling season we refresh cutoffs as each official round is released, so trend charts and predictions reflect the latest available allotment data. Off-season, the dataset reflects the most recent completed cycle.

5. Limitations (please read)

  • Predictions are statistical estimates, not guarantees of admission.
  • Real cutoffs shift every year with applicant numbers, seat-matrix changes, exam difficulty, and counselling-policy changes — factors no historical model can fully anticipate.
  • Always confirm final choices against the official counselling portal for your exam. See our disclaimer.
